It all started when the husband and I sat down at our dining room table for our regular evening meal. When Chris mentioned something about our tiny little table... Two years ago when we set out to LA we had nothing except our clothes and lots of books, and after moving into our first apartment it was as if we were racing against time to furnish that 700 square feet home. Which brings me back to the table... I desperately needed (wanted) a modern looking table with personality and only had a $200 budget. Ha! Complete joke. So I did what any determined gal would do: search craigslist up and down, every single day, non stop. Usually I find incredible stuff on craigslist, but this time luck wasn't on my side and I ended up giving in and heading to Target's website to purchase the said table. 

We are all aware that a $200 table at target = one year of use and that's pretty much it! I was aware of that from the beginning but made a choice to overlook it. That night when Chris made a comment about the wobbly table I couldn't help but feel the need to get rid of it right there and then. And just like that crazy decorating women kicked in and I set out on a journey to re-decorate our living room!

After buying a new table, chairs and a cover for the couch, I started investigating rugs. Have you ever tried finding the perfect rug? Man, what a difficult task it is. I searched all over the web, homegoods, tjmxx, that was when I came across Chairish. If you are into design and home furnishing, I am sure that you have spent plenty of time navigating their website (if not, please do!) Even though I am a lover of all color, I am a total white/brown/gray kinda girl when it comes to decorating and I have a really hard time investing in big splashy new purchases - I usually stick to the classics. However what I found to be incredibly helpful is to invest in pops of color in other areas, like pillow cases, art work and a rug that has a bit of both worlds. I love to mix cold hues like gray with warm colors like brown and yellow.

B&W Stripes Art Print / Striped flats / B&W alarm clock

It's been a while, I know. I did not forget about you little blog and whomever may still be reading. I hope you haven't stopped checking in to see what's going on in my side of the world. Life has been amazingly busy and, as much I hate to admit this, my head has been 90% devoted to work and 10% to my little family of three. Even though I've become quite the juggler, work has given me so much and this past week I received an unexpected promotion! Who would have thought that LA would be so kind to me? After I complained about how dirty it was; how expensive and untrustworthy the city appeared to be. It wasn't warm and welcoming, and to be honest, I started doubting the whole California way of life. I apologize, Southern California. Even though I still stand my ground when it comes to certain opinions, I did underestimate you and I hope you will forgive me. 

But this is not about my love/hate relationship with la la land. This is about my color obsession this past week. Black, black, and black! Maybe it's the never ending sunshine that prevails in California that has me craving for some gloomy weather. Or maybe it's because when I was a teenager, my dream was to move to NYC and become one those New Yorkers that only wear black and are ever so chic! Either way, I might just have to try to pull it off in this sunny 75 degrees weather.

food styling

I have to admit, I'm a total foodie. There is nothing that gets me going quite like a good tasting meal. And none of that no gluten, fat-free, vegan stuff. I like butter, olive oil, cheese and meat! I have been thinking about food a lot lately... Maybe it's because for the past month I have been on a Weigh Watchers plan and have been counting points on top of points, and have realized that there are not enough of those for me to be able to enjoy the guilty pleasures that I have. But on a happy note, I am now 7.8 ibs healthier and I couldn't be more excited about it.  

So to fulfill my food (and design) craving, I wanted to share my favorite food styling/illustrated photography by Dietlind Wolf! The styling is great, simple and creative. And the use of watercolor illustrations are a super clever way to substitute props, using the white background to make all the other colors pop out.

I'm in total awe with this amazing design and totally getting hungry right now.  All I want to do is throw my daily points out of the window and munch on some buttery piece of bread, dipped in a cheesy mix followed my a mouthwatering piece of red meat! ;)

what colored my weekend - pink people

Hello and welcome back! This post was originally scheduled to go live yesterday, but I had a pretty hectic day and it completely slipped my mind... So without further ado, this is what inspired me this weekend.

Maybe it's the fact that I have been craving a beach getaway in a while or maybe it's the end of summer in sight, but I am entirely captivated by the work of Monica Ramos.  Particularly this beach scene (called Summer Love) that run edge to edge in the most perfect pink pastel color palette that make you somehow feel the warmth of a sunny day. 

In order to cool down the temperature, I decide to pair the illustration with easy breezy pink perfections, such as the hand painted Mara Mi Kiefe stationery set with gold foil printed inside envelopes; the pop of color S.M.E.G refrigerator, that I know will probably never find it's way into my home due to it being, well PINK; and last but not least pink hunters for rainy season - that is everywhere else but Southern California ;)

And i'm back! Oh gosh, I am so so so devastated that I have left this blog behind this past few weeks but you know how it goes... Life happens and time is limited. Plus, I have turned into a full-time blogger at work and that has been where all my blogging attention has turned to. Regardless of the reasons, I am incredibly happy to be back and hope you all will forgive me for my absence :) 

To return on a very happy and colorful note, I put together my favorite mood boards: what colored my weekend! Usually I try to post this on a Monday using it kind of like a recap of my weekend, however we are breaking all kinds of rules today so why not do it on a Wednesday? After all, I am still daydreaming of my sun-filled weekend...

If you follow me on Instagram you are aware that my little bro flew all the way from Rio to spend a couple of months with Chris and I exploring Southern California, and we have been making the most out of it. On Memorial Day Weekend we camped in the Sequoia National Forest (jaw-dropping views) and this past weekend we decided to stay local and drive to Santa Monica beach and enjoy the cold waters of the Pacific Ocean. While there, we took the tourist route and ventured out on the pier for some good old hot dogs and ice cream cones. The never ending blue California skies always seem to inspire me... and along with the very colorful accents near the pier, it seemed like a what colored your weekend mood board perfect moment!

what colored my weekend: marilyn pink

Hello and welcome back! Monday is upon us once again so let's take it in little by little. First let's pour a cup of freshly brewed coffee and go for a walk around the block. After stretching out our legs, another cup of coffee is in order while reading the daily paper. 

Oh, how I wish every Monday was like this, but truth be told, usually it is very hard to get out of bed and when I catch a glimpse of my clock, there is only one thing that comes to mind: LATE LATE LATE! :) 

However, to start the week on a good note, I am sharing my favorite recurring post: What colored my weekend! This time around, Marilyn Monroe and her pink bubble gum definitely inspired my not-so-glamourous-in-my-pjs weekend. Ok... let's get right to it.

1. When thinking pink, Shop Bando is a must! Common' we all know the girls there know how to use pink in a very glamourous/girly way better than any one else. 

2. Oh these earrings... Etsy definitely has the best shops and this is one of my favorites. I can see Marilyn sporting these on a Wednesday night.  

3. Mr. Tea is awesomesauce! I would love to have my afternoon tea in this cup, wouldn't you? 

4. I have been wanting a typewriter for the past few years, but with all the bills and furniture buying for our new place, it just didn't seem right to spend a couple hundred dollars on an item that I would probably never use. I am addicted to my MacBook and there is no other gadget that will cure my obsession.... However, after finding this pink and cream one on Esty..... I might have to give it a chance. Maybe add it to my birthday list?  Plus Marilyn would totally dig this, don't ya think? ;)

{what colored my weekend} lipstick red

Man, this weekend went by fast! But then again they all do, right? To start this week on a good note, my very favorite blog selection (that I haven't done in a while)!! What colored my weekend today has a little hint Valentine's Day vibe to it. Even though I did not plan it out, this Vogue UK print just did it for me. And then every thing else just followed... Hope you had a fantastic weekend. Now on to the gorgeously red items...

1. Ashley Brooke gets me. Well, I think she gets all the girly girls out there... This print definitely deserves a place on my dresser. 

2. Lately I have been hooked on red lips, however it's not always that you can a get away with super bright lipstick. That is when this cute Bando brooch would come in handy.

3. As all of you are aware, I am a lover of all things Kate Spade. This past Saturday, I ended up at the TJ Maxx down the street from our apartment, and in the middle of a very chaotic pile of accessories, I found this amazing chevron scarf! When I saw the price tag on it, I just had to get it. It feels good to be a maxximista... ;) 

4. I may be the only person on earth that does not own a pair of Toms. However I think that might change real soon... (look at the price on this cute one!)

5. Red confetti. There are no practical or obvious reasons for this... Yet, I still want it!

{colors} benjamin moore color of the year

This is one of my favorite times of the year. When people (I mean companies...hehe) like Pantone and Benjamin Moore pick THE color that will be granted the very special title of "Color of the Year"! As a lover of all things color, it is an extremely hard task not to feel completely overwhelmed by the excitement that entails this very special date. It's like New York Fashion Week for fashion lovers, and the Oscars for celebrity/movie freaks! :) So here it is folks: Breath of fresh air! Benjamin Moore's color of the year. 

With that being said, it was of utmost importance that I curated a few pretty colored objects that made my heart skip a beat... 

1. the door... can I please purchase a little cottage and paint my front door this color? enough said! 

2. since we moved into our new apartment, all our living room furniture purchases have been white. I think these comfy bar stools are just what our space needs. don't ya?

3. philosophy makes the most well designed and inspiring products, and of course the sunscreen wouldn't be the exception   

4. If you know me (online or in person) this is pretty obvious. I love books and these are certainly the best definition of perfection... books that talk about color? YES PLEASE!

{colors} in the beginning - print publication

Brianna Ailie's work caught my attention while browsing senior projects on the UW Design 2013 webpage. I am in absolute awe with this print publication. There is nothing more appealing to me than good use of color, simple imagery and beautiful typeface. "In the beginning" tells the story of the Creation from Genesis 1. I am not a very active christian and not the bible reading type (no judgement here...) however, I love the way she utilizes splashes of watercolor to allude what happens in the story. For a lover of all things color, this definitely makes my favorite things list! 

Back when I was in college, I was an avid reader of books on design. Even though I was not an Art major (yet a communication one), there was something very appealing to me when it came to layout, color interactions and imagery. I often harassed my friends that were taking such classes for information and usually came out with a list of books to read. One that will forever hold a spot on my nightstand is "Interaction of Color" by Josef Albers. Oh my heaven... amazing! Anyways, going back to the subject... Yes, colors and alluding to the story. One thing I learned from reading Josef Albers is that when one person says RED to 50 different people, be sure that there will be 50 different kinds of red in their minds. This happens because we relate to color in such a unique way and also because color has such an influence in our emotions. When Brianna Ailie utilizes splashes of color on a very clean spread of paper, the reader has the opportunity to interact more to the story that is being told. It's like taping into their imagination and developing a story line based on a personal connection between the reader and what's laid out in front of them. Colors... and type, of course!  

"When color challenges the safe, enclosing geometrical properties of the pictorial surface, as it is meant to, it does so with a slowness and delicacy that are disarming and a beauty that is exhilarating" Mark Strand.

{what colored my weekend} black and white

Hello and welcome back! This weekend I finally had some down time to do some winter shopping. Since we had to down size (totally an understatement) when we moved across the country, my sweaters and pants stayed on the east coast due to the lack of space in our car... As many of you know, I am a lover of colorful things and usually am not attracted to the color black. For some reason, I just don't ever seem to buy anything that's black and white even though I love the combination. However, I am on the path to recovery for sure and am falling in love with all b&w things - especially when they are striped and polka dot. While shopping I encountered so many pretty black and white sweaters, mugs, pottery...and my list goes on! So needless to say... this is what colored my weekend.

{colors} pantone color of the year

Hello and happy hump day! If I could explain the past few weeks in one word it would definitely be ‘overwhelming’. As many of you know we relocated to Los Angeles (read more here) and I was very fortunate to find an amazing job a few days after we were situated in our little temporary studio apartment. This is my second week on the job and I have so much to learn, and I am trying to take everything in. It has been hard to slow down and concentrate on other things… However yesterday during my lunch break, I was mindlessly browsing through Pantone’s website (love to explore their endless color collection), and found out that their color of the year is one of my personal favorites: Emerald Green (read more here.) So classy!

What better way to illustrate the word classy and the ever so elegant color emerald green than with Vogue covers? Even better, vintage Vogue covers… Plus a gorgeous recent one that I couldn't help but fall in love with.

{collections} wedding magic - our vow renewal in brazil

There is nothing better than celebrating love... am I right? I love the fact that people come together to cherish the love between two people they care about. And the best part about it all is the great vibe you get at weddings. Ok, I have to admit that I am also a sucker for pretty flower arrangements, yummy cake... and let's not forget the glamorous decor. As many of you already know, Chris and I went to Brazil in August to renew our vows. We have been married for almost three years now, however since we got married here in the States, many of my family members did not get to be apart of it all (read more here and here) My lovely mom hired this super duper talented and sweet wedding planner (if you are in Brazil hire her here!!) and together we did great. I put together a pinterest board to help guide us through the creative process, and let me just say that it worked miracles when it came to long distance communication! 

I wanted to share a few pictures of the reception and highlight the teeny tiny details that brought life and personality into each flower arrangement and candle placement. This was definitely a labor of love...

I am still smitten by all the white, gold, pink and turquoise accents that went into the decoration. Not to mention mom's vintage english china pieces used as flower pots and dessert holders. I will forever hold this day in my heart and hope that one day I can do the same for my daughter (that is if we ever have one!!) ;)

{what colored my weekend} vintage matches mix

Today my "what colored my weekend" post is inspired by this lovely vintage matches print for The Aestate. I love her etsy shop and her work (remember this?) Anyhow, on our road trip we decided to collect a few pretty matches from bars and restaurants we stubbled upon. It is so much fun to see how these little tiny (sometimes useless) things can have such great design and personality. Even though we tried our hardest to gather as many as we could, it is hard to find establishments that still have pretty matches to hand out. 

The vintage matches photo print would go well place over this adorable dresser from Ikea. I love the clean lines on this piece of furniture and how there are no ugly handles! I would totally place a vintage globe on top of the dresser along with this gorgeous Nate Berkus for Target bowl - where I could store the matches we collected throughout our trip. Even though the bowl is not available on the website, I have seen it in certain stores and would love to get my hands on one. 

Weekends to me are all about gathering my thoughts and browsing aimlessly online. It is definitely when I get to experience the best of what the internet has to offer. What inspired you this weekend? Any pretty prints, bloggers or photography work that made you smile?

{colors} studio apartment decoration

I am very excited to be writing this post! As many of you know, I love decorating and always have a blast transforming ugly rooms into stylish little sanctuaries (remember this post?) Sometimes I do wonder why did I not go to school for interior design or architecture so I could do this for a living. However, I think that when you do something for yourself and for pure pleasure, it kind of feels special and creativity flows loose! 

As Chris and I reached L.A. we had a whole set of challenges waiting to be tackled. The first one was finding a place to call home. After a long list of leasing offices and neighborhoods we decided to settle for a sublet instead of a year long lease. I was not familiar with Los Angeles, however one thing that every one tells me is to "live as close to work as possible". And the reason for that is the never ending traffic that swallows this city. Since I am still on the search for a full time job and do not know where I will be commuting every day, a temporary home sounded just perfect for us. 

Yes, you heard me correctly: a studio! A teeny tiny place with not that many walls and a huge decorating challenge! Good thing is a love creative challenges... and I know that I can turn this ugly little sublet into a white swan of a home. 

Day one of our move was all about cleaning and getting things in order and day two was all about decorating research, of course! I found this image while browsing my favorite online place in the world (a.k.a pinterest) and my heart skipped a beat. No seriously! The column was the first thing that caught my attention... however, when you take a closer look everything from the color palette to the meticulous arrangement of furniture, makes you want to move right in. 

I am well aware that the studio we are currently living in will not look as polished and stylish as this one (we have ugly carpet and no pretty column separating the living area.) However, the whites, tans, bright corals, greys and lovely blues will surely give me a helping hand to transform it into a perfectly imperfect home.

{what colored my weekend} adventurous green

What better way to start the week than immersing yourself in a new adventure? An exciting and/or unusual experience. Bold and risky, with an uncertain outcome... Even though this might seem quite the nightmare for a control freak such as moi, there is nothing better than taking big steps forward - and this is just the first one! 

With the wind in my hair and "I want to get away, I want to flyyyy away" on the radio (it's an oldie, but a goodie), we will cruise the country after our own little escapade. While on the road there are a few things I can't live without... First most importantly is a cute little notebook to write down bits and pieces of inspiration you encounter along the way. I am a true believer in paper and will never fully rely on electronic gadgets to keep myself in check. Plus I love having a reason to buy cute little pens and highlighters! 

I live for scarves!! No serious... If I could have one in each color, pattern and fabric I would. They are my second best accessory (after statement necklaces, of course!) So what better than a lovely boho chic scarf to brighten up your comfy outfit or hold your hair back when you're singing Lenny Kravitz down the interstate?? Oh, and paired with these gold lip sunglasses... yes, adventurous to say the least.

{what colored my weekend} poolside blue

Monday is here and usually I am not very excited for the weekend to be over, however I had a fantastic weekend and so much to look forward to. 

On Saturday, I finally got together with a blogger friend and we had a great time talking over huevos rancheros and mimosas. (More on this meeting to come!) 

Sunday was all about poolside and summer fun. While I was hanging out by the pool, I took a look back through my Instagram photos and came across this one I took in the beginning of summer. My first swimming pool dip of the season! It made me think about how, for some odd reason, I have been avoiding the color blue. I do not know if it is because green, pink and gold have been so "in" lately, or because I have overused it in the past. Anyway, it is time to bring it back! 

A few things to end summer on a good note: 1) this album! check it out. 2) yes, I am already thinking about christmas and how our tree will need some blue ornaments. 3) recently stumbled upon this little etsy shop and fell in love. 4) since we are moving and selling all our furniture and decor (read more here), I have been focusing on redecorating. how cute are these geometric candles?

{what colored my week} strawberry pink

Earlier this week, I came across this amazing picture Chris took at a food festival here in D.C. I have a thing for pretty colored fruit - strawberries, watermelon, raspberry, pineapple... - and the picture just made me smile! Strawberries have a unique color to them. They are not a exactly red or pink... it's like the two colors met in between and had a party. And I am right to say that strawberries look like they have a ton of freckles on them? Eeek... I love some good freckles. They add just the right amount of personality and charm to anyone/thing. 

I curated a few of my favorite things on the web this week that go oh so well with the perfectly colored picture. The bathing suit screams comfort and charm (plus J.Crew is on sale right now...), Kate Spade does it again with the gorgeous color combo and the whimsical details on this tote (and yes, it is on sale as well!). I recently purchased this Essie nail polish mainly because of it's name - pink strawberry bliss. However, I fell in love as soon as I painted my toe nails with it (so summer).

{colors} august flowers

If you would have asked me a year ago what a Dahlia is, I wouldn't have known the answer. Even though I have always loved how flowers looked and smelled, their names and when they were in season, that was a whole other world to me. Ever since Chris and I got married and decorating has become a constant thing in my life, my interest has definitely grown exponentially. Because let's be honest, no house (apartment, studio or loft) is complete without plants and flowers - they bring life to any room! I am positive that if my mom is reading this post right now she is thinking "I told you so"... She absolutely loves gardening and my entire life I have questioned the reason why she loved to be covered in dirt - yes, now I understand. 

Even though we are heading towards the last month of summer, there are still plenty of pretty flowers that will be blooming this month. So keep your eyes opened for some of these beauties at your local grocery store and/or farmers market.

Dahlias are definitely my favorite of them all! These jubilant blooms come in many bright colors and they love the sun! The best part of it all is that they can adapt to most soil and are easy to maintain (brownie points here - I am not the best flower mother).

{what colored my week} decorating with wallpaper

WALLPAPER  / BAR CART /  PINEAPPLE / PILLOW / POUF

I have always despised wallpaper. I have never imagined decorating with such thing and would argue that paint is always the best option when thinking about the walls around you. However, for the past couple of years, the wallpaper trend has made a comeback and there are so many lovely designs out there (this, this , and this)! For the first time I am actually considering one day decorating at least one wall in my house with it.

This lovely and bold tropical wallpaper caught my attention while I was randomly browsing pinterest and it was love at first sight! I do not know if I would have the courage to actually use it in my own home, however it did inspire me a bit... 

Even though the Kate Spade pillow utilizes the same pattern and one would think it would be too much, the fact that it has the black stripes on the opposite side, makes it a perfect complimentary item. To add some accessories to the room I would definitely use this white Nate Berkus pineapple. It caught my attention on my last trip to Target and it goes oh-so well with the theme and gives it an contemporary element. And to top it all up, I just wouldn't resist adding a touch of gold!

{what colored my week} umbrella green

"An umbrella or parasol (also called a brolly, parapluie, rainshade, sunshade, gamp, bumbershoot, or umbrolly) is a canopy designed to protect against rain or sunlight. The word parasol usually refers to an item designed to protect from the sun; umbrella refers to a device more suited to protect from rain."

This print (by Flowers in May) perfectly translates my love for umbrellas and the color green. My dream has always been to own a closet filled with different kind of umbrellas (and wellies - but that is another story) to match  my daily outfits! This may be a tad bit over the top and probably will never occur,  however a girl can dream, right? 

It is odd that even though I love all rainy day accessories, I am not a fan of gloomy wet days and would trade it  in a heart beat for beautiful beach weather. Maybe that explains why I always purchase the happiest of all umbrellas - trying to make up for the lack of sunshine! 

Moving on to the lovely items that oh-so perfectly match this fun print.... Kate Spade iPhone cases are always the funnest ones out there! Plus I really could use an update...

I tend to always custom make our mailing labels but this one from Pencil Shavings Studio is just beyond adorable! As soon as we settle down you know this will be the very first thing on my list.

What girl does not like a fancy bobbi pin? Even though I rarely ever use mine (my hair is very fine and they slip right off), I absolutely love having them on my vanity. Wouldn't you?
